Preparation and characterisation of lanthanide complexes using substituted ureas and thioureas as ligands

C V DESHPANDE, V RAMACHANDRA RAO

Abstract

Simple complexes of the type LnL)CJ3 nH20, where Ln = Y(IU), La (III), Pr(II!), Nd(III), Sm(III). Gd(III) and Dy(lII), L = N-phenylurea, N-N' diphenylurea, N-phenylthlOurea, N-N' diphenylthiourea have been prepared and characterised by a study of elemental analysis, electronic spectra, infrared spectra, thermoanalyrical and conductiVity measurements, The presence oflattice-held and coordinated water molecules is inferred from thermal analysis. All the complexes behave as I: I electrolytes in methanol, dimethylformamlde or dimethylsulphoxide, A coordination number of six or eight is postulated for several of the complexes reported.

Keywords

Lanthanides; substituted ureas and thioureas; electronic and infrared spectra; covalency parameter; coordination number.
