Abstract

The stabiliy of an infinitely long gravitating cylinder of incompressible, inviscid fluid of infinite electrical conductivity in the presence of a magnetic field having toroidal as well as polaidal components is discussed. The toroidal component is a monotonic function of the radial coordinate. By employing the energy principle and normal mode analysis. we have compared the results. The results seem to be in good agreement. The general conclusion is that in every case the magnetic field increases the stability of the cylinder.
