The resonance Raman spectrum of I2 in solution

Herbert L Strauss

Abstract

An extensive set of resonance excitation profiles and the corresponding depolarization dispersion profiles of the vibrational bands of iodine in solution were determined. The results of the experiments are compared to the results of detailed calculations. The calculations are based on the gas phase potentialsof iodine. Overall agreement is good for the noninteracting solvents considered here. However, there are a number of discrepancies, which suggest that higher iodine states —perhaps charge transfer states involving the solvent - contribute to the Raman cross section in the visible region of the spectrum. A number of other small effects, such as rotation of iodine in the excited states, also contribute.
