RESIDUAL STRESSES IN IRON CASTINGS

Abstract

In This paper an attempt has been made of review critically the methods employed for the measurement of residual stresses, the test pieces used, causes of residual stresses in castings, mechanism of residual stress formation and relief of residual stresses. It is concluded that the causes of residual stress formation are fairly well understood, but the mechanism behind the stress relief produced by different methods is not as well understood. It is suggested that a detailed study of the various stress relief methods, independently or in combination, is essential to understand the mechanism.
