Composite Armour—A Review

Kiran Akella, Niranjan K. Naik

Abstract

Primary constituent materials of composite armour can be categorized as ceramics and fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. In this paper, we first examine a range of these primary constituent materials. We study their individual response to ballistic impact, and then compare their performance with other constituent materials. We review various combinations of these constituent materials and compare their characteristics. Subsequently, we study different configurations of armour. We also review studies conducted on the effect of bullet shapes and bullet materials. Based on these studies, we arrived at design considerations. Furthermore, we have reviewed the probable future directions for composite armour.
