Abstract

In real-time systems, like remote-sensing systems onboard satellites or aircraft, where the image is generated line by line, the use of JPEG compression technique results in variable data rate. For transmission of this data over a constant bit rate (CBR) channel there is a need for buffering the output of the compression system. In this paper, two techniques have been proposed for controlling the rate while avoiding buffer overflows and undertflows. Both the techniques have been simulated and the results are presented.

Keywords

Rate control; JPEG; image compression.
