Abstract


Discovering a structure among a set of items of information (or subjects) is of primary importance in every branch of science. This survey article outlines the principles and practice of numerical taxonomy, the science of grouping of items of information on the basis of their attributes. The role of digital computer in establishing the resemblance or similarity among the items from a qualltitative  description of their attributes, as well as identifying typical members is described. Important application areas are mentioned and a relevant bibliography is provided.
