THE USE OF BAR BUCKLING EIGENFUNCTIONS IN THE STABILITY ANALYSIS OF CLAMPED SKEW PLATES

Abstract


In this paper the use of bar buckling eigen functions in the stability analysis of clamped skew plates is examined. These functions which are obtained from the solution of the linear, homogeneous differential equation corresponding to the buckling problem of uniform bar are used in the series expansion for deflection. The problem is formulated in oblique co-ordinatesand using oblique components of stress. Galerkin method is used and theresulting set of algebraic equations is solved for the eigen values. Numerical calculations have been made for a few combinations of side ratio, skew angle andin-plane loading. The critical values obtained are in fair agreement with the results obtained by using beam characteristic functions indicating that thecefunctions can well be used as an alternate set of functions in approximate solution of plate buckling problems.
