INFRARED AND RAMAN SPECTRA OF WITHERITE (BaCO3) AND STRONTIANITE (SrCO3).
Abstract
The infrured and Ramon spectra of witherite (BaCO,) have been experimentally investigdteci and discussed in relation to the other orthorhombic carbonates. Using the large quartz spoctromph and X2537, 16 Raman lmes have been recorded and a splitting of the degenerate modes s3 and v, is found. But it is the mfrared absorption mnximna, onalyscd taking into account tho selection rules that provide any proof for the coupling of the vibrations of the 4 CO, ions in the unit cell. The infraredabsorption spectrum of strontianite (SrCO,) has also been examined in the light of the theories of vibration apectra of these carbonates.
