Abstract

Microstructured optical fiber embedded with metallic thin wire has been widely used for bio-sensing based on the principle of surface plasmon resonance. We review and study the fundamental properties like operating principle, design and performance of plasmonic microstructured optical fiber following photonic band gap theory. Finally, we present a very simple design of metal embedded hollow-core photonic crystal fiber for efficient sensing of very low refractive index, which can find potential application in bio-sensing.
